This
is a key picture to understand why the wall has survived in so many
places until now. Clearly, it is made of big, neat, regular blocks
on each side, and in between a filling of irregular stones and mortar.
The wall was not good for what Parisians did with
older buildings: use the stones as a quarry. The wall could only
be used as a party wall. On each side houses could lbe built agains
it. Thus enclosed by new buildings, the wall has been preserved
throughout the centuries |
