Saints Innocents cemetary

This cemetary was, for eight centuries the biggest of the capital.
Probably it dates back to the Xth or XIth century. It was in the district called "the Champeaux", on the outskirts of the city, according to the old Roman regulation.
It was an open space, so people would come for a walk, and children would come and play there ; even laundry was hanged out there.
When Louis V decided the Champeaux market had to be transferred there in 1135, it only made things worse. More people, more traffic...

In 1187 Philippe Auguste decided the cemetary had to be surrounded by a wall, to separate it from the Champeaux market. He also ordered its closing at night.
